My 2020 Music Recap

...

I'm nostalgic for a simple feeling I felt as a child: that the night would not leave me in silence.

It was the heat or air humming at night, the dishwasher running, my papa snoring, the soft mumbles of conversation - all of these things told me it was okay to slip into rest. These comforts dismissed my anxious mind that loved to cycle through worst-case scenarios, even as a kid. It was sound that consoled me - the music of everyday life.

Like many people, I've never been able to sleep in silence. There's something calming about the movement, the continuation, the way that sound promises to stay - even if it's in the background. It's a promise that light can't make. Light comes in bold and determined to be the center or attention. While it does share it's reach with others and returns daily (though sometimes tired behind the clouds) - it has to go at some point. It must share time with darkness - at least in the sky. But sound is persistent.

I don't know why, but it sits close to me - poised with care. Ready. Ready to battle whatever the night brings. As a blanket to warm me, as a sprinter to outrun my panic, or as a rhythm reminding me to focus on the beat. Sound has always been my safety. Gently going with me where others can't. No sound is not like light - it's doesn't have arms. It can't reach around you to embrace you or wipe your wipe your tears, no - it does something far better - it wrestles with your fear.

Because sometimes you can't turn a light on. It just has to be dark.

And I know that in those moments, all is not lost.

Somewhere music plays and dormant hearts remember what is always true:

We do not travel alone.

Someone plays and someone listens.

...

This year we all traveled less physically, but maybe more mentally. Here are the miles I traveled musically. Maybe there are some places you've visited too, or might like!
