Bridge Over Troubled Water

"The good Lord gave us mountains, so we could learn how to climb." This is one of my favorite Lonestar songs. It's one of my favorites because of the lyrics and because there is something liberating about crossing a hurdle. They can be mountains, hills, or bridges. Either way they force us to overcome. They are the line that takes from one thing to another. These "mountains" are usually the hardest part of our journey. They require the deepest part of us to rise. It's the highest height for the runner--when their oxygen gets thin, their face burns, and all they can see is a sharp incline. These "hills" are where people give up. It's not specifically the weak who give up, but rather those who don't see the value of the struggle. The bridge decides the way things will go. The bridge separates the deserving from the undeserving. The bridge can be terrifying if you're not ready--but without it no one crosses the water. Without it we drown. The bridge makes everything worth it.
In music the idea of a bridge is much the same. I often lose my breath when the bridge falls. It's like that moment when they pull the red curtain back to reveal the unknown. The music will usually pause or stop, and you know something wonderful is brewing. You stop your leg from bobbing to the beat and creep to the edge of your seat. The build up, the climb, gathers everything and gets ready to let it fall. It's the click, click, click as you gently steal up the roller coaster track. If you're like me your heart is stalling and your stomach is in knots. You're scared to look around--so instead you close your eyes and let your ears lead your exhilaration. You're so mad that you're on this crazy ride. Then a small hitch and your soaring... Absolutely soaring. You're soaring, a human, who can't fly by laws of gravity, but you are weightless and falling into the horizon. When you experience this "bridge" you know why you got on the ride. The bridge cuts to your core with words and the harmonies fly of the staff: then you know why. You only want that moment for the rest of your life. You want it because in that moment everything is sparkling.
The magic of the bridge is undeniable. It takes an ordinary song and makes it into an anthem. It teaches you to hold on every time. Your everyday might look like the verses, but stick it out because the bridge is coming. Take this bridge and see what it pulls you over. I remember the first time I crossed it. I didn't even hear the song, and I understood. It was talking straight to me--telling me to be worthy of the other side. And that meant holding on the bridge.

"Don't let the night become the day/ Don't take the darkness to the grave/ I know pain is just a place/ The will has been broken/ Don't let the fear become the hate/ Don't take the sadness to the grave/ I know the fight is on the way/ When the sides have been chosen."  --NEEDTOBREATHE
